• Whenever possible, bike or walk to your destination
    • Many JCMU students take the train from Hikone Station to Viva City but on nice days it makes for a nice 30 minute bike ride
  • Riding local trains takes longer than the Shinkansen but they are almost always the cheaper option
  • Consider taking a bus to and from Tokyo rather than the Shinkansen
  • Avoid staying out later than the trains run as you will be forced to take a taxi which is incredibly expensive
    • If you are out late, consider staying at a manga or internet cafe until the trains start running again
    • It's possible to lay low in a train station for a few hours even if the trains are no longer running
    • Some bike parking closes around 8; make sure you can get back to your bike if you don't want to walk or take a taxi
  • Take advantage of class trips
    • If you're taking a field trip somewhere, consider asking your professor if you can stay behind to make a day of it
